Applejack is a strong alcoholic beverage produced from apples, originating from the American colonial period. It is made by concentrating alcholic cider, either by the traditional method of freeze distillation, or by true evaporative distillation. The term "applejack" derives from "jacking", a term for freeze distillation. From the fermented juice, with an alcohol content of less than ten percent, the concentrated result contains thirty to forty percent alcohol, is slightly sweet, and usually tastes and smells of apples. So, there you go... AppleJacking could describe a very long drinking session.
Cider has become a lot more popular in recent years, probably due to the Magners TV ad campaigns and the relatively new term "Cider over Ice". This produces a very refreshing drink for a hot day.
Conventional apple cider has a relatively high concentration of phenolics and antioxidants which may be helpful for preventing heart disease, cancer, and other ailments. This is, in part, because apples themselves have a decent concentration of phenolics in them to begin with.It can be very acidic and contain high sugar levels. Excessive consumption can therefore erode the tooth enamel rapidly. As with all alcoholic drinks, over consumption can result in liver damage. Some people claim that getting drunk on cider often gives the most severe hangovers. Scrumpy cider is a term generally used for homebrew in the west country of England. Many cider home-brewers use recipes handed down from generation to generation. Scrumpy cider is usually slightly cloudy and often has particles suspended in the liquid. The alcohol content of Scrumpy can often exceed the standard 5.2% of shop bought cider such as Bulmers, Magners and Strongbow.
