Fishing for Life or Just Food

Written by JackC

Fishing: The act, occupation or sport of catching fish. To add "recreation" to the list would not be a mistake at all since fishing has become one of the most popular leisure activities recently. Over-fishing at sea has caused some stocks to become depleted, but in general the recreational fisherman/women is eco-friendly and maintains an active interest in keeping fish stocks healthy.

The latest JackC Articles contain very basic set-up information for the novice fisherman. However, even experienced champion fishermen may find the information interesting.

An experienced fisherman wouldn't need to read this article since it will not provide him with anything new. Surely he already knows all the techniques and the "secrets" of successful fishing. If you are still new to the subject though or are looking for a stress-free and intellectually stimulating hobby, than you've found the right source of information. Here is some basic information about the various fishing techniques and some of the best places where you can go fishing.

The basics.
First of all let's quickly go over the main fishing techniques. In general defining fishing styles is not an easy task as each style depends on both the technique used and the place. There are freshwater, sea and ice fishing as well as rod & reel and fly fishing. In all of the above baits or lures are used as well as fishing rods. Of course special tackles are used for each fishing style. Once you find which one is best for you (according your personal preferences and the convenient fishing places in your area) go and get all the needed tackles. A good start for beginners is the rod and reel fishing since it involves simple technique and most of the water areas in which fishing is allowed are suitable for rod fishing. Moreover the most common way of fishing is from a shore casting out into the water. It doesn't require a boat, bait or a lot of skill.

Where to fish.
Once you've got all the equipment required it's time to decide on your first fishing destination. A good start is to go to fishing place in your area, preferably along friends of yours who are more experienced than you. Once you gain some experience you can increase the difficulty level by going to fishing places that require much more skill or try boat fishing. Another opportunity is to enroll in a fishing club and start attending fishing sport events. It has no much difference than the recreational fishing, just an extra spicy sport spirit. The ones hungry for more exiting fishing adventures can explore fishing places abroad for famous fishing destinations. The list is quite long as there are several top fishing destinations almost in any country so the best thing to do is to make a research and pick up the one that best suits your requirements in terms of budget and fishing style.

Hunting And Fishing Is A Way Of Life For Some People
ARTICLE SUMMARY: Many people rely on hunting and fishing as a means to supply food for their family's table.

Hunting and fishing is the way many people survive in this world. Rather than going to the local supermarket, many people rely on hunting and fishing to supply them with meat and other nutrients for their bodies.

While some people grew up in families where hunting and fishing was used to supply food for the table, others have found it to be a rewarding experience later in life. Hunting and fishing are also activities that many people choose for recreational purposes.

Deer hunting is the most popular type of hunting in North America. The white tail deer continues to be a great catch, but its challenges often make it nearly impossible to capture. Its wilderness survival far surpasses other deer species because of its extra keen sense of smell as well as sight and sound.

A white tail deer can detect a variety of scents and it also has stronger olfactory senses than many breeds of dogs. Their skittishness also makes them an elusive figure in the woods.

Hunting and fishing is not only a challenge for many people, it gives them a chance to relax and something to focus on besides the usual grind of work and everyday life. Hunting and fishing can be like a vacation in the middle of a weekend or for a few hours after work. It can also give you a chance to be with friends and family who are just as busy as you are.

One challenge that hunting and fishing also provides is the quest for a trophy sized animal or fish. This is one goal that any sportsman secretly, or not so secretly, longs for. Most beginners are glad to catch or take fish or game of any size, but as experience kicks in, the desire to catch something worthy of hanging on the wall intensifies.

Many hunters will begin to pass on animals they could take, in hope that a big one will soon appear. Veteran anglers may begin to get out fished by novices because they refuse to put on the lure that their companions are using to catch anything that will bite. They use big lures designed to catch the attention of big fish that got big by passing on those other lures that the little fish go nuts over.

Hunting and fishing is a pastime for many people in much the same way that baseball is a pastime. As such, outlawing hunting and fishing would only lead to many people changing their way of life.

Whether they go hunting and fishing to supply food for their family or simply as a means of relaxation, it is enjoyed by people who truly understand the importance of it.

Throw That Fish on the Barbeque
ARTICLE SUMMARY: Fish tastes great fresh off the barbeque. Make a great marinade for a healthy and delicious meal.

Summer is a great time to take advantage of your barbeque. But when you want to eat a little healthier, hamburgers, hot dogs and ribs just aren't going to cut it as barbeque fare. It's a good thing that fish can cook quite well on the barbeque too.

One of the most important things you need to do before grilling fish is to thaw it out if it has been frozen. Frozen or partially frozen fish doesn't grill very well. It dries out excessively due to the added cooking time.

When choosing fish for your barbeque, select thicker steaks. Thin fillets will cook very quickly, but turn out dry.

Grilling technique matters. Your grate needs to be clean, or you can use a grilling pan. Oil it lightly so that the fish does not stick too much. Grill the fish about 4 inches from the coals. You want the fire to be moderately hot. Grill the fish for about 6-8 minutes per side. Do not close the cover as you cook your fish, as this traps too much of the smoke and makes the grilled flavor overwhelming.

You can flip the fish halfway through the cooking time if you prefer. Do not flip it too early in the cooking, especially if you are cooking a relatively tender fillet. Let it cook long enough to develop a bit of a crust for stability.

Fish is done cooking when it flakes easily.

A good sauce or marinade is key to really great barbequed fish. You can experiment with the flavors and decide if spicy, sweet or other flavors suit your tastes best. One of the great things about marinades is that they are ideal for experimentation and creativity. So of course I will share a personal favorite.

1-1/2 pounds salmon fillets or steaks
1/2 cup olive oil
4 tbs soy sauce
4 tbs balsamic vinegar
3 tsp brown sugar
3 cloves minced garlic
1/2 tsp ground ginger
crushed red pepper flakes to taste
salt to taste

Mix all ingredients except salmon in a bowl. Place salmon in a resealable plastic bag and pour mixture over it. Seal bag, squeezing all excess air out. Place in refrigerator and marinate for at least 30 minutes. Longer is better.

Lightly oil the grate of your barbeque and grill for 4-6 minute per side, or until flakes easily with a fork.

Some people like a lot more ginger, or perhaps a couple of teaspoons of crushed red pepper flakes. It just depends on how strong a flavor you are going for. This particular marinade works wonders with salmon, but you can certainly try it with other types of fish.
